History
Patagonia and the surrounding area are rich in history, from the early Native American Indians who lived here to the era of Spanish and American settlement of the region. Following are suggestions for self guided tours of the region.
Birding
The Nature Conservancy’s Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve
Birding enthusiasts travel to Patagonia from all over the world in search of rare, exotic specimens. The Nature Conservancy’s Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve is renowned as a birding habitat that hosts more than 300 species migrating through, nesting and living in this lush, beautiful sanctuary.
The Preserve is open Wednesday thru Sunday from 6:30AM or 7:30AM (depending on the season) to 4:00PM. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. The Preserve is located at 150 Blue Heaven Road, Patagonia AZ 85624, about 2 miles from the Stage Stop Hotel. Telephone (520) 394-2400.
Entrance Fees are $3 for Conservancy members and $5 for Non-Conservancy members. Guided walks are offered every Saturday morning at 9:00am starting from the Visitor Center.
Hiking near Patagonia AZ
Local hiking trails offer great opportunities to enjoy high desert nature at it’s finest. And for the more adventurous, the Arizona Trail winds over 800 miles from the Mexican border to Utah. The Stage Stop Inn lies directly on the Trail, and is a perfect rest stop for a hot meal, shower and comfortable night’s sleep. We are Trail Angels for hikers; arranging transportation, receiving and shipping packages, providing laundry services, or whatever else may be needed.

Cycling

Many bicycle tour operators include Patagonia among their tour stops. Patagon Bike Rental is conveniently located in our Inn. It offers bike rentals, cycling supplies, maintenance parts and service.

Hunting & Fishing near Patagonia AZ
Surrounded by mountains and meadows, much of it in the Coronado National Forest, Patagonia offers great hunting for birds and large and small animals. Quail and Dove are hunted from October to February, and deer from October to January.

It’s a rare weekend that Patagonia isn’t visited by motorcyclists from near and far. The high desert mountains and valleys offer exhilerating winding roads and grand vistas of boundless beauty. Historic western towns along the way offer plenty of opportunity to stop and relax, grab something to eat, and shop a littlle.
